Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!!!

As you know we had a special visit from the Cat in the Hat this week.  We wore our red and the kids made hats to wear.  I even wore more cat hat, check out my selfie below!  Here are some pictures from the assembly.

This week our essential question was "How can we understand nature?"  We read several folktales in which something from nature was explained.  Each folktale had a theme that we discussed as well.  The theme's included friendship and don't judge a book by it cover.  We read a story called "How The Beetle Got Her Colors".  Over the past two days we wrote a summary of the story and made beetle scratch art to go with it.  First we had to color a piece of card stock with many colors and then paint it with a mixture of black paint and dish soap.  That dried overnight and today we scratched our beetles out.  They are so cute, here are a few pictures.

We finished up unit 8 in math this week.  We have a mid-year assessment that we will review for on Monday and then they will take the assessment on Tuesday.  So we won't start unit 9 until Wednesday of next week.

I am super pleased with the book reports that the students did.  I enjoyed reading them over last weekend.  They were very creative!!  I think that was a good way to get their feet wet with a take home project.  Thanks for any help they may have needed.

I hear it will be in the 50's tomorrow, yipee!!! Enjoy!!
