Christmas Around the World!

So Snowflake our classroom elf has been moving around our class each night.  This week he traveled to Italy and England.  While in Italy he visited the leaning Tower of Pisa.  Snowflake brought back some great information about traditions in Italy.  Apparently in Italy Santa isn't the only gift giver, a witch named "La Befana" leaves gifts too but not until January 6th. We made La Befana and learned some Italian words.  Here is a picture of La Befana.
Snowflake also traveled to England this week.  He went sight seeing and took a picture of the largest clock tower in the world Big Ben.  We learned that the English refer to Santa as Father Christmas.  They also burn a yule log each Christmas.  Here's a picture of a yule log one of our students made.

We finished up our 2nd Unit in language arts this week.  Our essential question this week was "What do we love about animals?"  We read several poems that were written about animals.  The students learned that poems can rhyme and have rhythm.  We also learned that poems are a way to express your feelings.  We worked a lot with compound words this week too.

I attended the concert last night and the 2nd grade did a fantastic job with their songs.  We practiced a lot over the past 2 weeks.  Have a wonderful weekend!
