Calling Doctor......

Hi Families,
We had a very busy week.  I'm sure you heard about Doctor Taylor and Doctor Wells performing surgery this week, it was such a fun way to  learn about contractions.  Doctor Wells and I preformed surgery on words to make them into contractions while our surgical students watched.  The students then became surgeons themselves removing letters from words and bandaging them back together to make a new word.

In Social Studies we also had the opportunity to be factory worker, working on an assembly line to make a clown game.  In this activity we learned how many people working together can make something faster than one person by themselves.  This unit is about how goods are made and then brought to the public to buy.

This week in Math we worked on problem solving strategies and subtraction.  In explorations this week we started to learn the basics of multiplication and division. Next week we will work on more multiplication and a little division (sharing equal groups).

We have continued to apply making inferences to our reading this week in our lessons.  Next week we will continue to work on making inferences while reading.  As a good reader when we make inferences we us what we already know along with the information given to us. This is a difficult comprehension strategy which we will revisit throughout the year.

Students are writing small moments and we continue to use Angela Johnson as a mentor for our writing.  This week we noticed that she likes to use ellipses in her writing to create tension and drama.  She also likes using a repeating line in her stories.  We are trying to apply these techniques to our own writing.

Thank-you to all the families who emailed pictures for our community project, they are perfect!

Have a wonderful weekend!
Dr. Taylor  ;)
