Hi Families;
Hope that you had a nice spring break. It was nice seeing many of you at Opening Day last Saturday. Wish we had this weeks weather last week. Everyone seems nice and rested and ready to tackle the end of the school year.
In Language Arts this week our essential question was "How are kids around the world different?" We read several pieces of realistic fiction that gave us lots of great information about how kids around the word have different customs, but also how we are alike in many ways. One story was about two cousins who lived in different countries and they wrote letters to each other sharing what their lives were like. We learned that in Australia they play a game called 'stuck in the mud' it is just like how we play freeze tag. In France they like a game called 'snail' which is similar to hop scotch. We are working hard on looking back in the text to help us find answers to questions and we did a lot of visualizing this week too.
We started unit 11 in Math, this is a unit in which we will review new concepts that we learned this year. Estimating money amounts seems to be difficult for some students, so this is a great review. Hopefully with some practice we will improve this skill.
In Social Studies we are exploring how the city of San Francisco has changed over the years. This week we looked at pictures of San Francisco from the 1840's and compared them to the city today. We discussed why people wanted to move to San Francisco. We will continue this unit next week.
This week students began a science unit on rain forest. We read "The Great Kapok Tree" and watched a power point presentation on the four layers of the rain forest. We will continue to study rain forest next week.
I hope to see all of you next week at BEST OF HEIGHT NIGHT! It is Tuesday at 7:00 pm!
I just want to remind you that next Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday are Scholastic Testing Days! Please make sure that your child has had a good night sleep and a good breakfast so that are ready to start first thing in the morning. Also make sure they are on time to school, this is very important! Remind the kids that this is nothing to be nervous about, it's just to see how much we have learned this year.
Have a great weekend!
