This week in Literacy we worked on making predictions and finding key details from the beginning, middle and end of stories. All of our stories were realistic fiction. Each story was about children learning about animals in different habitats. Our read aloud was about a group of students who visited a swamp and learn facts about animals that live there. We also read about a boy who visited his grandmother in the desert and she taught him about desert animals and how they survive. We finally have our google classroom set up for all students and we will continue to utilize this technology in the classroom. As a wrap up for the week students researched polar bears and gathered four facts each about polar bears. This gave us the opportunity to use the chrome books and work with google classroom. Students are learning to toggle between the website and their document.
In math we continued to learn mental math strategies. We will review all the topic skills next week and have an assessment. Topic 4 will be more addition strategies including learning how to regroup. (This is the method we learn as kids. ;) We had a timed practise today and almost the entire class has shown improvement!!! Students that beat their best scored earned a homework pass from me. This homework pass may be used for an entire nights homework when the child chooses. I told them to put the pass inside the front sleeve of their red homework folders. They simply staple the pass to the homework and turn in the next day into the homework basket.
In Social Studies we continue to learn about communities. We have focused on the differences between urban, suburban and rural communities. We had a few activities this week that really helped us to understand what it may be like to leave in these communities.
In writing we continue to work on personal narratives. We had mini-lessons on adding details, speech bubbles, and using dialogue. Another fun writing activity was that students designed a Halloween costume for me and had to explain why they think I should be that for Halloween. Here are a few pictures, some are really funny!
Have a wonderful weekend!!!
