Solids, Liquids, and Gases

We are finally finishing up our solids, liquids and gases unit.  This week the students made a tri-fold using pictures and cheerieos to explain solid, liquids, and gases.  This was a fun way to see what they learned over the the last several months.  Here are a few pictures of the tri-folds and the kids working on them.

Our essential question this week was "How do people get along?"  We read 3 interesting stories about children who had to adapt to new situations and figure out how to get along with another character.  We continued to focus on summarizing stories and look at character point of view.  The students are doing much better with this skills.  I have started to ask them to write a summary after they have read awhile during Daily 5.  They are getting better at picking out the important details.  At home you can have your child summarize what they have read each night for their 20 minutes of reading.

In math we have been working with money all week.  The students are getting better at counting combinations of coins.  We also practice using calculators a lot this week.

We continued to work on writing poems this week.  We hope to get them published next week, in order to have a poetry book made in time for Best of Heights Night.
