Why are rules important?

This weeks essential question was "Why are rules important?"  This was a great topic for this time of the school year.  Often when the warmer weather settles in students forget why rules are important, so I was grateful for this week long reminder that rules are made to keep people safe.

We read a story about a family that visited Philadelphia to explore our countries history.  The students were excited to know that the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were written only 20 minutes away across the river.  Many of them shared stories about visiting the Liberty Bell and Constitution Hall. In our little groups we read more about our government and why they have rules for things like foods and medicine.

In math we worked a lot with subtraction this week.  Subtracting money and subtracting with trading. It seems as though we are starting to get a little better at this.  Several students often have to be reminded to slow down and really look at ones place, tens place and hundreds before subtracting.  I often remind them with a little poem of the process for subtracting.

No need to Stop!

Go next door and get ten more!
If the numbers are the same
zero is the game.

This simple reminder is all that some of them need.  We will continue to practice subtraction a lot for the rest of the year.

We started learning about the Rain forest this week.  We read a book called The Great Kapok Tree and started to learn about the four layers of the rain forest.  Ask them if they know the layers.  We will continue with this next week.

Have a nice weekend!!
