What makes us special?

Happy Friday!!!  It feels great to have our first full week under our belts.  It was fantastic to get to meet you all last night.  I am always thrilled to see that Woodbury Heights Parents are invested in their children's education!  The quote "It takes a village to raise a child.", is so true.  Together I look forward to working with you all in educating "our" kids.

This week we read a fable called "The Lion and the Mouse" and an article called "Meet the Artist", we compared these two pieces of writing and discussed what made the characters and people special.  In "The Lion and the Mouse" the Lion didn't think that the mouse was special in any way and would never be able to help him.  The Lion learned in the end that even though the mouse was small he had a special skill.  Ask your child what the Lion learned from the mouse.  In "Meet the Artist" we read about 2 children who both have an artistic skill that makes them special.  Perhaps your son or daughter will tell you about those skills.

Hopefully you saw our suitcases hanging up in our classroom last night.  The children wrote about how they spent their summer vacation after we read a book about how a boy with a great imagination spent his summer vacation!

In Science we started our Balance and Motion unit.  The students learned about balance points, counterweights, and stable positions.  In Social Studies we started to talk about communities and how people live, work and play in their communities.  Also on 9/11 we briefly discussed that some bad things happened 12 years ago and to honor that day we made a patriotic craft.

Homework will start on Monday!  Also I want to clarify the math facts assessments that your child will be taking.  I was wrong last night when I said they would be assessed 7 minutes for each operation.  They will work toward completing 50 addition and 50 subtraction in 7 minutes total.  So any help you can give your child at home to practice the facts will be greatly appreciated.

Have a wonderful weekend!
