Travel Brochure's

This week as a culminating activity for Unit 4 in Literacy the students were each assigned a state in which they had to research and create a brochure for.  We started by choosing a state and then heading to the computer lab to find our information.  I created a graphic organizer in which the students had to find things like the states's nickname, bird, flower, capital, and attractions.  We used the website factmonster to find this information.  Then students used google images to find pictures.  Today we worked on taking our information and making it into a paragraph and then gluing our pictures onto our brochure.  The students were responsible for writing captions under the photos and making their brochure colorful.  I am very pleased with what they created here is a picture of some of the finished brochures.  You'll have to wait for Best of Heights Night to see the rest.(Oops I forgot to turn it around.)

This week in math we had an exploration day in which we explored area, capacity, and tools for measuring.  We had a lessons on area and perimeter. Today the students were given this month timed addition and subtraction test, I'll be sending those home on Monday.  I'm very pleased with the improvement on these facts the last several months.  However, some students need to practice at home.

In Social Studies we discussed this week why communities may change.  We made community today in which students worked in pairs to draw things that certain people may like to see in their community.  For example one group had to draw places that people with families might like to see in their community.  The drew parks and a Bounce U.  Another group had to draw things that older people might want in the community, like a community center or doctor's offices.  Here a a few pictures from this activity.

In Science I'm sure you heard about Oobleck.  We read the book by Dr. Seuss and made Oobleck yesterday.  Next week students will make a poster giving the properties of Oobleck and then deciding whether it is a solid, liquid or both.

We are in desperate need of pencils an erasers.  I only have about 6 erasers left for the year and only about 2 boxes of pencils left.  We seem to go through a box a week lately.  I would really appreciate any donations that you could make.

Have a wonderful weekend!!
