Mission Hot Cocoa Disaster!

On Monday the class was left a top secret envelope along with an Elf.  It turns out that Santa spilled some hot cocoa on his laptop and lost important information about Christmas Traditions around the world.  We named our elf Snowflake and she travels a few times a week to places through out the world.  Snowflake brings back information about the country she visited along with a craft.  This week she traveled to Germany, we learned that the tradition of decorating trees comes from Germany. Christmas trees are called Tannenbaum in Germany.  Take a look at pictures from this week.

Our essential question this week was "How are offspring like their parents?".  We read and listened to several stories about animals.  In our read aloud we learned that baby wolves are born blind and deaf.  Did you know that the male Penguin keeps the penguin egg warm by standing with the egg on its feet for up to 2 months?  The mother and father switch after the 2 months so that he can finally eat and rest.  In our little groups we read about more animals including deer, kangaroos, and alligators.

We had a very busy week of writing.  The second grade worked with Mrs. Moran to link writing and art this week.  The students wrote how they would catch a snowflake and in art they made a picture of themselves catching snowflakes.  To go along with our friend Snowflake visiting we also wrote an opinion piece about why we would make a good head elf for Santa.  The kids really took off with this topic and came up with some amazing reasons.  The third piece of writing we worked on was a friendly letter.  The second graders made and wrote letters to the seniors in our community to wish them a Happy Holiday!

It has been a very busy week!  Have a great weekend!
