How can a pet be an important friend?

In Literacy this week we read stories about pets.  Our interactive read aloud was about police dogs and how the dogs and their partners work together but are also friends.  Our shared reading was a story called "Finding Cal".  The main character in the story was so excited to finally get a pet, the story is about finding that pet and the relationship that they have.  We also read "Not Norman" a cute story about a boy and his goldfish.  The skills we worked on this week were identifying the characters, setting and events.  We also asked questions while reading to help us better comprehend our reading.  Students have worked on writing a response about the stories we have read.  We are focusing on restating the question in the first sentence of our response.

In math students took their first math assessment.  The assessment is a little different then what they are used to, a bit more explaining is expected of them.  I think they all handled the first assessment well.  I can see that the timed facts for homework is really helping.  Every student has improved their 6 minute timed score.  Please continue to practice addition and subtraction facts at home.  We will start our new math topic next week in which we will work with odd and even numbers and we will also use arrays for addition.

This week in Social Studies we made our own communities.  Students worked in groups of 4 to plan and design a community.  Each student had a job within the group and they each had to make two places to live, a place to work, and a place to have fun.  It was fun to listen to their discussion about where to place the drawings in their community.  Before the activity we discussed that homes are usually around other homes and store and businesses around one another.  Here are a few pictures of the completed communities.

In Writing we continue to work on writing personal narratives.  Lessons this week included how to revise and edit.  Today we worked with a writing partner to revise and edit.  We also started a word book to keep in our writing folders to help us with spelling.  So far we have entered all the names of our classmates and common words we might use in our wrting.  This will be added to as the year goes on.

Hope you all stay dry this weend! Have a good weekend
