It was a pleasure to meet all of you last night!! I am so excited to work with you and your children this school year. We have had a wonderful start to the year!
In Literacy this week our essential question was "How do we depend on friends?". We read several stories in which the charcters depended on on a friend to help them solve a problem. We worked on visualizing while reading and finding important details in the stories. Students have picked up where they left off last year with writing responses about their reading. I was impressed today with the responses that they wrote for one of the stories we read this morning.
In math we are working on addition strategies. We have worked counting up from the bigger number to add and trying to make a ten. Students are enjoying the visual learning and use of manipulitives that our new math program offers. Next week we will begin to look at strategies for subtraction and continue to work with addition too. The 2 min. timed practice I send home is meant to be a quick practice. As we learn new strategies students will improve. I would like to remind you that students only need to complete the circled problems from their daily homework.
In writing we have focused on learning the expectations during writing time. I have them writing as an informal assessment as well this week. This will allow me to see the skills they have and to gather information regarding what we need to work on.
In Social Studies we have continued to discuss what a good citizen looks like at school, at home, and in the community. This week students had the opportunity to work in small groups to act out a scenario that showed being a good citizen and not being a good citizen. We also made group poster that show ways in which we can be good citizens. Here are a few pictures of the posters that we made.
Today we are all looking forward to our TEAM BUILDING activities. Have a wonderful weekend!
