Happy New Year!!!

Hello Families,
It has been a wild weather start to the New Year!! I hope we get some mild temps soon!

Last week on Thursday myself and Mrs. Wells became Dr. Taylor and Dr Wells.  We did a fun lesson called contraction surgery, in which we dress up as doctors and perform surgery.  Here is a picture of me in my uniform.
We made Mrs. Wells room into a hospital for words.  Our medical students watched us remove letters from words and then put them together to make a contraction.  The medical students wore masks and gloves during their practice surgery.  It was so much fun, I hope they will always remember this lesson.  Here are some pictures of our patients in the recovery room.

This week in Literacy our essential question was "How can people help in their community?"  We read several pieces of Narrative Nonfiction about people who had an idea and that idea helped to improve a community.  This unit fit in well with our Social Studies units on community too.

We worked with more contractions this week and started to work with words that can have the same meaning.  As you know from homework we also worked with past and future tense verbs.

In Writing we began to work on opinion letters.  We are currently working on writing letters to Mrs. Gansert about something that will think could be improved in the school.  We brainstormed ideas, looked at a model letter and are working on organizing our reasons.  We hope to get our letters typed up in the computer lab next week.

In math we finished up unit 5. I hope to have those ready to send home on Monday to be signed.  We started unit 6.

We began our Solids, Liquids and Gases unit in Science this week.  So far we have observed a set of 21 solids in which we had to sort them by the properties of shape and color.

Stay safe this weekend, hopefully the temps will rise a little!
