Patricia Polacco

With these being a short week we decided to focus a little on the author Patricia Polacco.  She is the author that the entire school is studying during the first half of the school year.  Yesterday we read 'The Keeping Quilt', in this story Patricia shares the story of a family quilt that has been handed down from generation to generation.  This quilt was made from the clothing of relatives from Russia and has been used to welcome new babies and in many other family traditions.  We then made our own quilt pieces about our favorite memories or special occasions.  Here is a picture of our classroom quilt.

Today we read another Polacco book called 'My Rotten Redhead Older Brother'.  We were all able to make connections to this book, especially if we have older siblings.  This is a great story about the rivalry between siblings.  The kids connected so easily and were eager to share their own stories.  We used the book to learn the difference between physical traits and character traits.  Students made their own 'Redhead Older Brother' and glued words that they thought were his traits. We also discussed the author in more detail today. Here are a few pictures.

In Social Studies we completed an election day packet today.  Yesterday we finished up our map unit.  Next week we will begin to look at geographic features in Social Studies.

Enjoy the long weekend!!
