Happy New Year!!!

I hope you all had a restful and enjoyable Christmas and New Year's!  It's time to get back to work!  Aside from being a little sleepy on Monday we really had a great week.  I know I was happy to get back to a more structured routine.

Our essential question this week was "What can we see in the sky?", this led to several detailed discussions about they sky. Many students really enjoyed the content of the stories we read this week.  All the stories were fiction but they each talked about interesting topics like eclipses and star formations.  I know this peeked interest in a few of the students.

In writing we wrote a recount of how we spent our New Years Eve or Day.  We first talked to a partner to help us remember those details then we put them into a graphic organizer.  Student later wrote a nice neat copy and we hung them along with a picture in the room.  Here is a picture of a few.

We also spent some time reading books about penguins and deciding if we thought they would make a good pet.  Students are still working on those writing pieces but we also made penguin wind socks to decorate the room for winter here are a few cute ones.

We started a new unit in Science this week.  The kids are excited about studying Solids, Liquids, and Gases.  Our first lesson had us observing two objects a plastic spoon and a steel ball.  After working with a partner to make and discuss some observations we made a chart of how they are different and alike.  At this point I shared with them that both objects are solids and that we would explore the properties of solids.  In the next lesson students were given a try of objects to sort.  They sorted them in may different ways.  We focused mostly on color and shape and learned that these are properties of solids.  We will continue to explore more with these solids next week.

Hope you stay warm this weekend!!!
