I have a dream....

With Monday being MLK day we did several activities this week to learn more about Dr. King.  We read a book called "Martin's big Words".  Students from both 2nd grade classrooms were each given a puzzle piece to write a word on like peaceful or friendship.  They then colored their piece according to directions.  When placed together the pieces make the image of the world. Students then wrote in a cloud bubble how they  could make the world a better place and made a kid to represent themselves. It turned out to be really cute here is a picture of the puzzle which is now in the hallway.
Students also wrote about if they had a dream for the world what would it be.  Here are a few pictures of these.

This was a big week in math.  We have been working on subtraction and we started double digit subtraction with re-grouping today.  This is not an easy concept for 2nd graders to master.  We will continue with re-grouping on Monday and most of next week.  Some students are having difficult time understanding when to re-group.  Here is a poem that is helpful!  Please practice this at home.

More on top
No need to stop

Go next door
and get ten more

Numbers the same
Zero's the game

In Social Studies, we are exploring how goods are made and then transported to stores.  We made a clown toy last week and this week we pretended to be different forms of transportation to get the toys from the factory to the stores.
In Science the is week we explored more properties of solids.  We tested for hardness.  Students worked in their small groups and had to organize their solids in the order they thought was hardest to softest.  We then discussed the order and explained why we thought some solids were harder then others.

In Literacy this week we discussed and read about "How weather affectsus ?".  We read about different types of clouds, tornado's, blizzards, and hurricanes.  We focused a lot on finding the main idea of a piece of text and finding supporting details.  This is not easy and it is something we will continue to work on throughout the rest of the year!

Have a wonderful weekend!!!
