100 Days Down!!!

This week we began Unit 4 in Wonders and our essential question was "What makes different parts of the world different?"  In this unit we compare and contrast places from around the world.  This week we read about the seven regions withing the United States.  Today students had to take information about these regions and compare two of them.  I find that 2nd graders really love looking at maps and learning about how the world is so different.  Another area we read about was Alaska.  The kids were amazed to learn that part of the year the sun shines 24 hours a day and right now they have many hours of darkness.  In our our little groups we learned about Rocky Mountain National Park and the different zones with in the mountains.  Ask your child about the montane, the sub-alpine and the alpine zone.

In math we have been working hard on measuring.  This week we practiced measuring with inches and centimeters.  Many of the students need to be reminded that not all rulers start measuring at the ends, they must look closely to see where the zero is located in order to have an accurate measurement.  We measured many items through out the classroom.  We will continue with measuring next week too.

In Science this week we started liquids and the students observed the  properties of glue and water.  They worked with a partner to see how it moves in a cup and when stirred.  They also looked at how it drips from a spoon back into the cup.  Finally they put a drop of each liquid on a piece of paper to see how it spreads and to feel it as well.

The big event this week was the 100th day of school.  Only 79 days left to go after today!!!  I 'm just looking forward to more spring like weather.  The kids wrote about what they thought they would be like when they are 100 years old.  I took their pictures and aged them using an aging booth app.  They are so funny, I can't wait for you to see them at Best of Heights Night.  Here is my pictured aged.  I'll be happy to look this good at 100.

Have a wonderful weekend!! Stay warm!!
