This week we explored how the earth can change. We learned a lot of interesting facts about volcanoes, erosion, and glacier. During some of our shared reading time we read a piece called "Into the Sea". This piece of text explained how erosion can be caused on beaches and the Earth's surface by wind and water. The kids were shocked to find out that the Grand Canyon was carved by the Colorado river. Another exciting topic this week was Volcanoes. We read and researched about the 3 different types of volcanoes. The students had to take their research and write a report. A few have finished but many are still working on their final draft of their report. You'll enjoy reading them at best of Heights Night in April.
In math we continued to learn about measuring and the different units of measurement. On our lessons this week had us measuring with a cut our of our foot. This was to show the difference between standard and nonstandard measurements. In another activity we measured the length of our classroom and the upstairs hallway with yard sticks and meter sticks.
In Science we observed four liquids glue, shampoo, oil and water. We have discussed and observed that some liquids are very fluid while other are more viscous. Students looked at the liquids in a ziplock baggie and noticed that liquids take the shape of the container that they are in. We will continue with liquids next week too.
In Social Studies we did a great economic activity this week. Students were given $10 each (play money). They were put into groups. Each group had items that they could buy with their $10. The groups had to decided without arguing who would get to shop first. I always find this lesson interesting cause it gives us insight into who already knows about saving. Many students love to spend as much of their money as they can. While their are always one or two who only buy one item and want to put the rest of their money in the piggy bank. We also discuss if the items they bought are needs or wants.
Have a wonderful weekend!
