Can you believe it's the first day of spring and were still dealing with the white fluffy stuff! As a class this week we were so excited about the warmer days and ready for Spring. We even took a walk Tuesday afternoon get inspiration from nature. The students wrote down things that inspired them in nature. In literacy this week our essential question was "What excite us about nature?". We read many poem written about nature. This has inspired us to make our own book about nature and spring. We are currently working on writing poems about nature. The plan is to make a published picture book of our poems. Everyone is super excited about this process. We are like real published authors. We are writing and re-writing and revising. We've learned about free verse poetry and have also had lessons on line breaks. This project will carry over into next week I can't tell you how impressed I am with their poems. They are using figurative language like similes. I can't wait for you to see the finished products.
In math we started working with time. Time can be very difficult for Second Graders. Please help me by quizzing your child at home. If you have an analog look in your house just ask once in awhile how to read that time. We are still learning but many of the students are doing well with time.
In Social Studies we have been discussing the reasons why communities grow and also why they get smaller. We created our own community this week and then demonstrated what would happen if major business left and how that would change the community. Today we are working as city planners. The students will look at a old neighborhood with abandoned homes, they work as a group to decided if these homes can be fixed or if they are beyond repair and need to be torn down. Next, the group will have to decide what to replace the torn down building with. This lesson gives them the opportunity to show how town and cities can have a rebirth and be nice again.
Please make sure to check your child's red folder this weekend. Today the revised school calendar is going home. It shows the changes for the snow days that we had this winter. Hopefully this white stuff will stop and we can have a nice weekend! Have a great weekend!
