Good Citizens

This week during literacy our essential question was "What do good citizens do?".  We read about Dr. Martin Luther King and how he helped to change the segregation laws in the south.  Students explored point of view this week.  We discussed how Dr. King and many other thought these laws were unfair.  Students also read two realistic fiction stories in which the characters had to make a decision.  We looked for clues in the text to help us decide their points of view.

In math we continued to work with coins.  One Wednesday we solved word problems and this was a bit difficult, we will continue to practice more word problems.  It is often hard for them to determine which operation is needed to solve these types of problem.  We also had a lesson on coins equaling a dollar, students did very well with this lesson.  Next week we'll finish up this unit on time and money.  We'll review for a day or two and then they will have a unit test.

In Social Studies we have been learning about San Francisco how this community grew from a rural area to a big city after the gold rush.  This week we learned about the great earthquake of 1906 and how the city had to rebuild.  The students were fascinated by this information.

In Science we are moving on to learning about the rain forest.  Yesterday we read the book "The Great Kapok Tree".  Through this story we learn about how many different creatures depend on the rain forest.  Next week we'll start to discuss the different layers of the rain forest.

Have a great weekend!!
