Author's Purpose

In literacy this week we focused on author's purpose.  We used clues in the texts that we read to decide if the author was trying to entertain, persuade, or inform.  All the pieces of text that we read this week had to do with how we use energy.  The students learned a lot of cool facts about energy.  Here are the pieces that we read this week.

This week for writing we read the book Officer Buckle and Gloria this is about a police officer who visits schools and gives safety tips.  We discussed the safety tips mentioned in the book and brainstormed some of our own.  Each child choose what they thought was the most important tip.  They used a graphic organizer to list their tip and give three reasons why it was the most important, Next they used this to write about their saftey tip.  They picked some interesting tips.
In Social Studies we have been working on a Good Citizen booklet.  After several lessons and playing a good citizen game students used their knowledge of what makes a good citizen to complete this booklet.  Students also pledged to be good citizens and they choose three things they could do to be a good citizen.

In Science we have continued to read Charlotte's Web.  The kids love this book.  In computers with Mrs. Selby we are researching different types of spiders.  Students have been assigned a spider to research, ask them what their spider is.

On Friday students will read The Wall and discuss the importance of Memorial Day.  They will be making a Memorial Day booklet that they will be bringing home.

Hope that you all have a wonderful long weekend!!!
