How can a pet be an important friend?

This week in Literacy we explored how pets can be so important to people.  Our  interactive read aloud was about a missing police dog named Echo.  Another police dog and his human partner helped to find Echo.  We worked on the comprehension skills of asking questions while reading to help with understandinf.  Another story we read was called Finding, Cal in which a child goes to  a shelter with his Dad to pick a pet dog.  We used clues in the story to help us understand why Cal would be a pet for the boy.  We applied these skills in all of our little reading groups as well.

In math this week we learned several addition stratgies.  Many of the students have taken off applying these stratgies.  However, there are a few students who still need practice with adding doubles.  Making flash cards on index cards is an inexpensive way to practice adding doubles with your child.

In Social Studies we have continued to learn about communities.  This week we read about a town in Texas that is over 150 years old.  We also looked up some facts about Woodbury Heights and our towns history.  Did you know this town is 100 years old this year?  Students were excited to learn these facts.  We worked in cooperative groups this week to design and make our own towns.  Here are a few pictures of the towns the students made.  They each had to make 2 places to live, a place to play, and a place to have fun.  Students had to plan and design the town in their group.

Reminder: No school for students on Monday!
Have a wonderful weekend!!
