How do friends depend on each other?

Our first unit in Literacy is about friendship and families.  This week we read stories about how friends depend on each other. We discussed this in detail before, during and after our stories.  These stories are great to set a good foundation of friendship in the beginning of the school year. Some of the skills we worked on were visualizing and finding important details. Students were able to make many connections to the stories we read.

In math we are learning all about addition facts.  We will work on addition and subtraction through out the entire school year.  You can expect a math home work each night.  The class work will be on one side to use as an example for the homework.

We started our first unit in Science this week "Balance and Motion".  Our first activity was to try to get a oak tag cut out of a crayfish to balance on our finger.  This was a challenge!  After a few minutes of trying to balance the cray fish on thier fingers I intruduced clothes to be use as counterweights.  Students discovered that they could get the crayfish to balance on their finger if they put the counterweights down low.  Ask your child about this fun activity!

Last week we listened to a story called Enemy Pie! It's a very cute story about how neighborhood boys who are enemies find a way to become friends. We made our own friendship pie! I'll post a few pictures.  We also read the book How Full Is My Bucket?  This book is a great way to teach children about the different ways you might make others feel with words and actions.  It also shows them how to be kind make others feel good.  Here are a few pictures of this activity.

Have a wonderful weekend! Remember Back to School Night is on Tuesday!
