How are kids around the world different?

We have been very busy this month with lots of great stories about how the world and people are different.  In Wonders we started our latest unit on looking at how parts of the land are different in different areas of the world.  This week we examined how kids are different and the same around the world.  We read a story about Chinese New Year and compared it to how New Years is celebrated on Dec. 31 and Jan.1.  Another story that we read was about two cousins.  One lives in a city in the USA and the other lives in rural Mexico.  We discussed and wrote about how these children's lives are the same and different.  In our little reading groups we also read about children in India, Japan, and Italy.  We found it fasinating how similiar we all really are and enjoyed learning about culture differences too.

In math as you know we have been working hard with subtraction.  I'm really pleased with how well the kids are learning about regrouping, they seem to be all doing well.  We just have to remind them to look at the ones place first.  I have a little poem I found a few years ago that I have taught them to remember how to regroup.

More on top no need to stop.
More on the floor,
go next door and get ten more.

Reminding students of this I find is helpful with subtraction.  We will continue with 2-digit subtraction next week.

In Social Studies this month we have studied several Black Americans in honor of Black History Month.  We learned about Harriet Tubman, Jesse Owens, Jackie Robinson, Rosa Parks, and Ruby Bridges.  Ask them what they remember about each of the famous Americans.

In Science we gave continued to explore states of matter.  Mrs. Wells always has an interesting experiment or project for us to work on.  This week we discussed which tools would be best for the job.  Students had to use tape and glue to make a person and decided which was better to use for this job.

We have been doing a lot of writing.  Earlier this month we wrote about what life might be like when we are 100 years old.  This week we imagined we turned into the tooth fairy and wrote about our adventure.  We also taste tested 3 different types of Hersey Kisses and decided which was our favorite and wrote an explantion as to why that was our favorite.
