Nature

What excites you about nature? This was our essential question for the week.  We read many poems about nature.  These poems included similies and figurative language.  We looked for clues and found the theme of these poems.  We used this topic for writing as well.  Students wrote poems about nature in the free verse form.  We had lessons on line breaks and conferenced several times.  Next week we will publish these poems and make a poetry booklet.

In Math we have been working with word problems all week.  Yesterday and today we worked on two-step word problems.  This is difficult and I like how this new program is approaching the teaching of word problems.  I like how we are breaking them apart to solve each step.  Most students are catching on quickly.

In Social Studies we have been learning about differenty type of pollution.  Students worked in small groups to identify types of pollution and who would be affected by this pollution.  Next week we will finish this unit with an assessment.

In Science this week Mrs. Wells had a fun activity in which students worked in groups to design a house of straw, wood, and bricks.  This was a STEM activity in which groups were given their material and worked together to design and build their house.  After building their house we used a blow dryer to see if it would blow down. (Like the bad wolf) Here are a few pictures.
