Heros

This week we read about and discussed heros.  We discovered that heros come in many different sizes and shapes.  We read about Diana Golden who as a young child loved skiing but due to a battle with cancer she lost one of her legs.  She did not let this stop her.  She learned how to ski with one leg and paved the way for many other disabled skiiers with rule changes in competitions.  She inpired many. In our little reading groups we all read about a man named Rudy Garcia-Tolson, who is an amazing inspiration.  Rudy lost both of his legs as a young boy.  Rudy is a paralympic swimmer, winning his first metal at the paralympic games in Greece.  He continues to train and has competed in China, London and is currently training for the paralympic games in Brazil this summer.  Rudy has also completed many triathlons including the Ironman. He was told that he may spend the rest of his life in a wheel chair, but he has not.  He is also a motivational speaker to young disabled athletes.  Rudy truely inspired us this week!

In math we are back to working on addition.  We have moved onto 3-digit addition.  So far we are really picking this up quickly, thanks to our prior lessons.  Keep practicing math facts at home.

In S.S. we have begun to explore service jobs in our community.  We made a chart and added drawings of service jobs to the chart.

In Science students are studying habitats and have been working this week on researching and writing a report about a habitat.  We also went to the computer lab to type our reports.

Don't forget that students have off on Monday!
