How can people help out their community?

We continue to work on identifying an author's purpose in writing a piece of text.  This week all the pieces that we read were narrative non-fiction.  We read about a community in Arizona that was struggling with keeping the community safe and clean.  The community worked together to create a mural that included many interesting facts about that community.  This mural brought people together and gave them a sense of pride in their community.  Today we read a story about a man from Columbia who loved books, he had so many books in his home that his wife asked him to find a new place for the books.  He decided that he would travel by "borro" (donkey) to far off villages that did not have access to books.  Essentially he was a traveling library, be let children borrow his books and would return with new books a week or two later.  We also read about a women who grew up in New Mexico with out electricity.  She works with a solar panel company to help people who do not have access to electricity.  All of these people helped their communities.

In math we have been working with word problems.  My best piece of advice while helping your children with the homework is to remind them to reread the problem for understanding.  Most students are doing well with these word problems, we will continue to work with word problems next week.

In social studies we are wrapping up our map unit.  The students will have an assessment next week on map skills.  We will then move onto talking about what is in our environment.

Next week we have a quick trip to the zoo on Friday.  We will be meeting with people from the zoo to discuss the water conservation project and to see the Golden Lion Tamrans, we will also have lunch at the zoo.  We do not intend to explore the whole zoo at this time, that will be our scheduled trip in the spring.  Please make sure your child dresses appropriately for the weather.

Have a great weekend!
