February......all ready!!

Wow, I can't believe we are in the month of February!  We are rolling through this school year so quickly!  Last weeks trip to the zoo was amazing!!  We got personal attention by the volunteers at every turn.  Our friend Brad who works for the zoo and helps with the "UNLESS" project, meet us at the Golden Lion Tamrin exhibit.  He shared a lot of wonderful information about the Tamrin's and a few of the other animals in the exhibit.  Students asked lots of questions he was very nice to answer all of them.  After seeing the Tamrin's Brad showed how the zoo has worked really hard to find ways to conserve water.  They use plants that are natural to area, therefore they do not require extra watering.  The zoo has built an entirely green building "The Zoo U", the roof catches rain water for many different uses.  They have replaced leaky pipes throughout the zoo.  We saw the hydration stations that the zoo uses as well.  Brad also helped us get more information about what we need to do with the project.  NJ.com published a piece about our trip to the zoo and the "UNLESS project".  Check it out!
UNLESS Project

As you can see by the homework.  This week we moved onto money.  Please practice counting handfuls of change with your children.  This will help them to identify and skip count the coins.  We have a few more lessons with money and then we will move onto time.  Practicing time is also important.  Students can easily read a digital time but have a harder time with analog time.  They also need practice with other ways to say time, for example 3:15 or quarter pass three.

In writing students have been working super hard on creating a non-fiction book.  We are just finishing those up.  Students picked a topic for which they researched using their chrome books.  They have included text details in their books like a contents page, pictures, labels, and a glossary.  This took many weeks of work to put together.  I am so excited about the outcome.  Students will share their books with the class next week.

In Literacy we have continued to work on main idea and key details.  Our essential question this week was "How doe we express ourselves?"  We read pieces of text about how people express themselves through music.  Today students choose an instrument to learn about and make a poster with facts about that instrument.

In Social Studies, we are celebrating Black History Month.  We will learn about two famous African Americans each week for the the month.  We stared this week with Harriet Tubman.

Have a wonderful weekend!
