How are kids around the world alike and different?

This week we focused on compare and contrasting pieces of text that focus on how people from around the world are a like and different.  Students excelled at finding these differences and similarities.  We discussed the use of similes and how they help readers get a good picture in their heads.  Students took a reading assessment today and I'm so pleased with how well they all did.  We have really been focusing on writing good responses too, and I starting to see some really well written responses to reading.  Great job second graders!

The past few weeks we have written several reports.  We worked on weather reports and Presidents reports.  We are now switching our focus to opinion writing.  This week we started with brainstorming things that we could write a review on.  My example was writing a review of a Kindle.  We also had mini lessons on a good introduction and organizing our review.  We will continue with opinion writing next week.

In math we are working with 3 digit numbers.  We are working a lot with place value to prepare us for adding and subtracting 3 digit numbers.  We will finish up topic 9 next week and we plan on having the assessment on Friday for this topic.

In Social Studies we wrapped up Black History Month this week.  Students were very interested in learning about many important and famous Black Americans, they listened intently to all the stories we read.  They really have a natural curiosity for about learning about others and different times in history.  We are moving on to learning about the environment and our community.

Have a fantastic weekend!
